5 Things We Love About the new Royal Enfield Shotgun 650
Welcome to our latest video where we get straight into the world of the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650. As avid motorcycle enthusiasts, this has been a model that we've eagerly anticipated. Ross was invited by Royal Enfield Australia down to Melbourne and the beautiful Yarra Valley to test out the bike. Now that he's had the chance to ride it, we're excited to share our top five things we like about the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650.
We must say a massive thanks to Royal Enfield Australia.

A road riders perspective on the BMW M1000R
Great video chat by you guys. I've had several RT, but am now thinking of an RS. Just not exactly sure why...my 2020 RT is pretty fantastic!
DOn’t get me wrong, I did love the RS when I had it for review, but the RT is perfectly set up for touring, and is just as sporty, so if you plan on doing a lot of touring, it would be the RT for me.
Just a note on the adjustable windshield , I think that riders over 6 ft notice a slight improvement in buffering however, I added a windshield extension and that was a huge improvement .
Yes, I have heard the extender makes a difference.
I like it but I’m holding out for the Classic 650
That is going to be a wonderful bike when it eventuates, can’t wait to ride one.
I have had four GTS’s over the last ten years, one was stollen but thats another story. I carry a pillion a lot and buying a set of foot peg extenders is a must. My GTS now is a 75 anniversary addition and its basically a Super Tech, I agree about the instruments, I don’t really like them and miss the analogue instruments. I tour two up with mine and love it. In the 90’s I had big bikes and for me the Vespa beats them hands down.
Didn’t know about the foot peg extenders. Thanks for sharing and also, thanks for watching.
@@BikerTorque They put the pillions feet further back, more comfortable for the pillion and better for the rider. Watch out though as they can cost from 30 GBP and 100 GBP. I have had both, I bought the 100 GBP pair first when I didn’t know any better. There seems to be no difference in quality between any of them. Cheers.
Enfield really NEED to change the headers (down pipes ) to look a bit more like the old style triumph bonneville down pipes (more splayed out) then the enfield would look more better (in my personne opinion) Peace out ✌
I’d actually love to see a stacked exhaust on the one side
@@BikerTorque ,a two into one system🤔?...why not , maybe that would look cool 😎 .....now all we've got to do is get someone to do the system 😁. Peace out ✌️
@@andrewbull3537 i was thinking still 2 into 2, just like a double barrel.
It’s called a shotgun after all
@@BikerTorque ah OK 👍.. so it's a bit like a harley exhaust 🤔......yeah 👍 I can visual that .
Review the old bullet😂
Would love to if I can get me hands on one
I’m probably the only defender of the BMW app in the bike world. I find it excellent, and adding waypoints is easy as hell. The only issue is turning off notifications and putting on do not disturb. If you do both, you won’t ever drop the connection. The navigation is perfect and simple. To add waypoints: 1) search for destination (using the map icon from main screen) use postal code or name 2) select your destination 3) on left at the bottom click the waypoint icon (map with dotted line and waypoint sign (DOH!!!) 4) choose from drop down (set as start point or set as destination/waypoint) 5) once set choose route type, fast/winding/etc on central button at bottom 6) to add another waypoint click + icon (top right of dialogue box) 7) use postal code, name or icon ribbon bar with categorised POIs (petrol, food, etc) 8) click floppy disk icon to name and save route 9) when connected to bike, go to nav screen and saved rides 10) become a good biking journo by reading manuals and instructions so you can inform the audience better
Hey thanks for the info, shall try and get that working next time I get a BMW with a nav. Just got the record, I’m actually not a journo, the UA-cam channel is just a hobby. Thanks so much for the support.
@@BikerTorque I’m really sorry for being an arse. I’d just had a to do with someone. The review was great and I liked the format. I’ve subscribed.
i really really realy really want one
You are not alone
I thought it was going to sound good haha sorry
It actually sounds ok, video probably doesn’t do it justice
Lovely lady, BTW how tall is she? My wife is 5'3" and we were considering the Honda for her.
Actually not sure, but probably about the same height
Waiting for this video🤗🌹
Hope you like it! Might have a video this coming week in the bike
I have a 1250R. The app is awful. I never use it. Love the bike.
Agree with you about the app. Thanks for watching
To me its the best looker with no extra to spend. It's a winner.
I think I’m with you there, although would love to see a stacked exhaust
Great video! I'm lucky enough to have a Z1 (1973) and a Z1B (1975). I've got other bikes but these are just fantastic .... I can't get enough of them. Just need some decent weather! 🇬🇧 👍
You are lucky indeed, much difference between the two?
@@BikerTorque The Z1 has twin front discs which was an option at the time but I had the second disc fitted - it is a good upgrade. I try to alternate taking them out on dry days. I use the Esso 99 fuel in them and they run much better on this imo. They don't like not being used and need a good blast at least once a month. The Z1 is the Orange and Brown colour and the Z1B is Candy Blue. The Z1 has a black engine and the Z1B has a silver engine. I can't detect any difference in power. The Z1B has had 3 of the spark plug holes helicoiled (before I owned it) and the 4th one blew the spark plug out on a recent ride so that is now helicoiled too. This might indicate a potential weakness with the aluminium head but the Z1 is still standard and no problems to date. PS I've also got a 1985 Kawasaki GPz 750 Turbo which is a mad bike! 😄👍
had one nightmare have to take the fairing off to check oil and just fall apart bulbs blew every day,its all myth old tek and rose tinted glasses a modern 500cc would blow it away.
No doubt a modern 500 would be quicker, and you are probably right about rose tinted glasses, still…I love to own one.

BMW has 3 (or 5, depending on the bike) heated grip settings. 1, 2, and Nuclear Fission Reaction.
I’d agree with that.
Hello. Have you consider trying out the CFMOTO 650GT? Probably the ONLY middleweight GTourer on the market.
No, haven’t spoken to CF Moto yet, hearing good things about there bikes though.
The LC is ugly and destroys the appearance of the dash IMO. Looks square and sharp and plastics and it often plays up too. Nice bike tho. If it could go with the Honda CB 350 it would be perfect, but it is limited to 110.. kmh and very slow acceleration for the last 10-15 kmh. Honda 350 can do 125 130 +
More character than the Honda though.
Love the content you guys put out, the best Aussie motorcycle channel for sure. Test riding one of these tomorrow, tossing up between this and the Super Meteor.
Have fun! I have to say, love both but Shotgun for me.
If there’s one thing I love about group riding with Vespas no one is trying to prove they have a bigger “one” than you. Everyone is welcoming and friendly and can’t wait to share stories and talk to each other and become friends.

16 years on a CBR1100XX Blackbird, loved it. Scoffed at ever buying a stodgy, posh BMW. But, the 'Bird got old, 90K miles, and I started looking around. Friends riding GS's were fast on the backroads and raved about their bikes. But I wanted a bit more comfort for those long days. Before covid, I took a test ride on an RT - when I say test ride, I mean that I rented one in San Francisco and did 1600 miles of Northern California with my wife riding pillion. I was surprised by how capable it was. So when I got a bonus at work, I went right down to the dealer and bought my own RT in 2021. I love this bike. I can whip it around mountain roads with gusto, or ride the open country roads or highway with the cruise control on, either way, I'm perfectly comfortable for 3-400 miles. I did finally get the Connected app sorted, but it does have shortcomings. So I mounted a Zumo XT, which has its own shortcomings. But between the two, I always get there! 😆
1600 miles. That’s a decent test ride. Thanks for sharing, would love to try a blackbird one day
The Blackbird is a once in a generation bike. All these years later im still in love with the design and performance of that bike. What a machine
The classic 650 is already in testing in india i saw it this month on the road it will launch in 1st quarter of 2025 and btw really nice little video!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Did you get any pics of the bike being tested?
@@BikerTorque I was not able to click the pictures but there are many available online ua-cam.com/users/shortsESP6rE-eO1o?si=CPTeJPr180AtvpAq
🤗🙏
Thanks
They still need a cruise option for these. I have been doing in person visits at the RE dealers and really wasn’t impressed with the overall build quality and finish of the bike. For the money though it’s kinda what I expected. Plus here in the states their ride off value after purchase is massive. They’re a “Nice” motorcycle.
Do you mean cruise control?
K1600GT or GTL? So you are correct, if you are not going to go in dirt, the GS is a looks bike and the RS is the bike you should buy. If you want more power and can handle some more weight, then consider a K16.
Would love to try the K1600 at some point
yes the sheet metal is my choice too
Yes, it’s a nice colour way. The others look good to but can’t help but think they could have pushed the colours and graphics a bit more so they are more edgy.
Good 🙏🤗🌹
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice review! Some of your comments are relative to your short time on the bike. I've owned mine for a little over two weeks, and find no problem with the headlight at night, selecting the modes while riding, etc. As is the case with most bikes, it's just developing the motor skills for your particular bike. I love my V7 Special Red Stripe! It just wants to go into the back roads and twisties!
That’s so true, agree you can’t fully appreciate the bike only having it for a couple of weeks, also, as mentioned we had so truly atrocious weather in Sydney at that time which limited my rides with it also
@@BikerTorque Would love to come to your beautiful country one day. I've flown all around it, east-north-west, but never landed!
Tempting. Wouldn't mind one myself. Suspension needs to be good though because Adelaide roads are rubbish.
Suspension was ok. I left it on the factory set up, but was chatting to Jeff Ware from bikereview.com.au. He tweaked it just one notch and said it was a big difference.
@@BikerTorque cool. Thanks, might need a test ride.
Bite the Bullet!
Sounds like a plan
Great fun to ride, sounds gorgeous, seriously tempted, seat very comfy.
It really is!
Mate it’d be fun to flog that up 99 bends great looking little thing too hope ya well man cheers
It would be an awesome bike for that stretch of road. All good here mate, plenty happening.
Nice looking bike!
Sure is! Great second bike also.🤔
It looks like a good option for the cruiser crowd, especially with HD killing off the entry level "affordable" Sportster, but I'm waiting on the RE 650 Scrambler. And I'm hoping that it will actually scramble & not be just a styling exercise like most of the modern Scramblers.
If it's on Interceptor frame it's going to be just a styling exercise. Actual scrambler will be on the Himalayan 450 frame.
Haven’t really followed how the HD 350 and 500’s are going. The 500 looks OK, but that 350 to me looks like an abomination. I’m sure they both ride just fine, but for my money it would be the Shotgun, proven engine and chassis. Pretty sure the next Scrambler will be based of the Himalayan.
@@BikerTorque The RE 650 Scrambler prototype was spotted in September last year, so it's probably not too far off. You were obviously not a fan of Evel Knievel & his HD XR750 as a kid like I was. The HD 350 replicates the look of the XR & looks awesome IMO. It's just a pity it's devoid of any personality & feels like any other modern small capacity twin. HD's 500 has heaps of personality & feels like you're riding a bigger bike thanks to the 360 degree engine. It's just a pity that it looks dog ugly IMO with that bulbous tank. It's Benelli sister pulled the look off much better & looks quite clean, while the HD 500 looks frumpy in comparison.
@@radekknauer2891 It's neither. Harris Performance have supplied a few different new frames for testing according to reports. I'm more concerned about the USD forks on the prototype. They don't look like they have a lot of travel from the photo's.
@radekknauer2891 not on Interceptor frame, this uses the Super meteor frame.
Im a GS rider only because I ride offroad. If i didnt, or when i no longer want to, the RT is my next move
Makes sense to be on a GS if going off road. Are you talking dirt and gravel roads or full on outback adventure riding? Thanks for watching.
@BikerTorque believe it or not I ran an enduro race on it a few months back. Up till then, fire roads and some motocross tracks. I finished last but i didn't care. My goal was to try and I did. No doubt the gsa looked crazy out there next to dirt bikes and dual sports but man did i have a blast. Nothing like feeling that boxer power pulling you up hills over boulders or getting 600lbs airborne. Worst part was having to pick the heavy beast up every time I washed out. After 45 min i had nothing left in the tank...which is why i finished last lol
@@dnbanb and that’s what life’s all about, having a crack. You finished and that’s the main thing, although not sure I’d be keen to take a GS full on Enduro.
@BikerTorque no doubt was probably one of the hardest physical things ive ever done. Enjoying your channel from the US btw. Keep up the great content
@@dnbanb cheers mate, we’ve just handed back the R1300GS, that video will be up soon, no way I ever go Enduro on it, graded dirt and gravel yes. Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel, we are really enjoying producing it.
Great review Ross. Totally agree with all you said. I was chatting with Chas Hern the ride leader today (I was in group 2 of the launch) and we both agreed that the geometry, weight distribution & tune of the 650 twin lend it to being far more nimble than the Continental GT. I absolutely loved it, could definitely see some additional colourways on the horizon & yes.....new models to come!!!
I need to do a ride soon on the Continental GT to compare, but I would totally agree with that. Couldn’t believe how well it handled. Sorry we didn’t get to catch up, maybe next time mate.
Piano in sheet music means soft. So soft black maybe? Is the seat as comfy as the Meteor 350 seat? Still rate that as one of the most comfortable seats on a modern bike.
The seat is actually very good, no complaints from me after about 4 hours on the bike
Piano black refers to it being glossy black like many grand pianos are.
You ain't wrong. I rode Chiang Mai to Bangkok last week 710km , me ass was fine ..😂 *Crap Game* 🎉
Nice review mate and I believe you popped into my local coffee shop in Warrandyte.
No way! I think we did. Great coffee.
@@BikerTorque yes you did. River view cafe. The owner rang me to see if I was working from home as I only like 2min up the road over the river.
@@roadtripperozadventures sorry we didn't get the chance to catch up Damo.
@@BikerTorque me too mate. I only left 20min before you arrived. Next time please let me know and would love to say hi.
Great review. I'm a GSA rider and looking to add a second bike. While in Portugal 2 weeks ago I rented an RT and really enjoyed it. Comfortable, loves the curves and handles better than a GS in the twisties. I did not like the BMW app and wish they would provide the option of Android Auto instead. The RT will most likely be my additional bike.
Great to hear you enjoyed the RT, it would make one hell of a second bike
"handles better than a GS in the twisties" I agree. On my third RT now, a 2021. Have rented and ridden several GS's (up to a 2023) and prefer RT handling and protection. Did 1000km in one day two weeks ago on a cool and rainy day in France but were totally fine on the RT.
@@russspeiser4540 I second that. Don't get me wrong the GS handles really well, but the RT is wonderful.
If you have a lot of money to burn and want a truly ugly machine, you should buy one!
Anyone agree with this sentiment?
@BikerTorque not at all. The bike is beautiful and the price reflects alot of value you wont get for a long distance tourer from other makers.
@@dnbanb spot on
@@BikerTorque No. People compliment it all the time. I think it is as beautiful as my Blackbird was - and that's saying a lot, because the 'Bird is one of the classic beauties.
I believe the Goldwing F6B delivers more bang for your buck. And a perfect everyday allrounder. It weighs more, but is lower so you don’t feel that weight. And, cost of maintenance is significantly lower. The DCT is very smart, perfect shifts everytime.
Looks like a fantastic bike Ross. I thought our R18 was a big bike, the TC is next level. The perfect balance makes them a joy to ride. BTW, I would ride to Newcastle to watch a George Michael show.
Thanks Mick, I know who to call next time AMber invites me to a George Michael Tribute show, the tickets all yours.
Great review. I’ve had my R18 Classic Highline for 2 months and absolutely love my bike. Thanks for the tip Ross. It’s an adventure every time we do our pie run.
Love the colour of your Highline.
What a beauty....love it...
Sure is.
good friend
Thanks for the visit
On my 4th rt,there brilliant, just to let you know regarding the navigation, you can plan a route using the mottorad app on your phone and you can add waypoints on your chosen route, once you’ve sussed how to use it properly it’s really easy
Maybe I’m just getting old and impatient because I found the app a punish. Thanks for watching, and agree overall they are brilliant bikes. Which model did you start with?
It would be interesting to hear how they have advanced over the years.
@@BikerTorque started with 1150 then the very first 1200 in 05,twin cam 1200 in 2010,current 1250 purchased in 2022,had other bikes in between, the current model is by far the best but 2010 twin cam was a great bike and a fair bit lighter, personally I think the current model is probably the best all round motorcycle you can buy
Excellent review, Tassy looks like a brilliant ride. Q. The mirrors on that RT look like they are very low, or was it a camera optical delusion ??
A. Tassie was awesome, and definitely a delusion.🤣🤣🤣
I'm lucky to have a 2018 GS and an 2019 RT and more often my bike of choice has been the RT. Love the looks of the GS, but as you say I won't take my own bike worth 17k off road. Also, starting to appreciate how easy it is to get on and off the RT. Most importantly my wife prefers the RT as a pillion, says the GS is terrible.
We’ve got the R1300GS at the moment, awesome bike, but can’t wait to see that engine in the RT. Love both but still the RT for me. Thanks for watching.
Agree with your words. If you are planning on riding dirt then the GS is the one. The off roading is a gimmick to me, taking a GS really off road is really challenging. Service forest roads and dirt roads is maybe already too much for any regular GS rider. I choose an RT over a GS for that exact reason, I dont have any dirt to play around nearby so the RT is a much better handling machine on the tarmac. It has a shorter wheelbase and the 17 front inch tire is way better on the road than the 19' on the GS. Weather protection is excellent too. And the big plus of the RT, you feel like a moto cop while riding it! and they even wave at you when you pass them. Amazing stance, big but nimble and super sporty. Put it on Dynamic Mode and ride it like a cop!
How good is Dynamic mode, loved it. Thanks for watching, glad to hear you are loving your RT
